A snapshot from Waimea Canyon / Kaua'i, Hawaii Taken by OneBrownGirl, June 2011 |
After two years of camp adventures in the US Virgin Islands, OBGAC's CampHawaii will debut on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i this year for a two-week summer camp program chock full of cultural appreciation, environmental stewardship, social engagement, volunteerism and waterfront fun!
I spent a week on Kauai last year during an OBGAC scouting trip and I'm excited about what Kauai has to offer CampHawaii adventurers! From time to time, I thought it might be fun to share some fun facts about Kauai on this blog to build up to the excitement and to potentially give Adventurers a little subject matter for the required 150-word essay about Hawaii. These fun facts are courtesy of Wikipedia.
Aloha and Mahalo!
1. Kaua'i was originally known as The Sandwich Islands. I even wrote a blog post about it.
2. Kaua'i has been featured in more than 70 Hollywood movies and television shows.
3. Guava, coffee, sugarcane, mango, banana, papaya, avocado, star fruit, kava and pineapple are all cultivated on Kauai's fertile land. I ate the tiniest sweetest bananas while on Kaua'i. Wish I could find the photos. Guess you'll have to see for yourself! =)
4. Kauaʻi is home to thousands of wild chickens; they originated from the original Polynesian settlers who brought them as a food source.
5. Kaua'i is of volcanic origin and is 6 million years old.
6. Waimea Canyon - The Grand Canyon of the Pacific - is one of the most scenic places in the world. (CampHawaii Adventurers will get to visit Waimea Canyon State Park.)
